Alvaray Judges CIFF Short Documentary Competition

Media and Cinema Studies Professor Luisela Alvaray recently served on the jury for the Short Documentary Competition of the 53rd Chicago International Film Festival. The jury was comprised of Prof. Alvaray, Patrick Lile (Business Administrator of Operations in the Dept of Radio-Television-Film at Northwestern University), and filmmaker Shawn Convey.

From a selection of 15 short documentaries from all over the world, the jury selected three that stood out for the ways they narrated their stories, for their style and for the importance of their topics. The winning films include:

• The Painted Calf (David Pantaleón, Spain, 2017)
• The Rabbit Hunt (Ivete Lucas & Patrick Bresnan, USA, 2017)
• The Streets Are Ours: Two Lives Cross in Karachi (Michelle Fiordaliso, USA, 2017)

In addition, in the context of the festival, Alvaray moderated a discussion with Academy Award-nominated, documentary filmmaker, editor and producer Sam Pollard.
