“Emmanuel
DePaul Journalism graduate student Emmanuel Camarillo is one of three Chicago area students awarded a $2,000 scholarship by the National Association of Hispanic Journalists for 2017.

Camarillo, who grew up on the West Side of Chicago, said he made the decision to attend graduate school at DePaul University because he said he understands the need to have Latinos with higher degrees and in decision-making roles.

He said he chose journalism, particularly photojournalism, to truly showcase the effects that politics have in the world, and plans to showcase his reporting in both Spanish and English.

Camarillo is currently the video and photography assistant for TV Azteca Chicago as he works to get his master’s in Journalism from DePaul.
