Communication Student Crowned Miss Black North Shore

Mariah Scott, a junior here in the College of Communication, has been crowned Miss Black North Shore in this year's Miss Black Illinois USA pageant.

According to a press release distributed by the organization, Mariah "bested the contestants through a compelling spoken word performance to capture the crown as Miss Black Illinois 2014."

Mariah will spend 2014 promoting the Miss Black Illinois USA’s community service initiatives and representing her own organization, SOUL “Speaking Out as Unified Leaders,” housed under DePaul University, which teaches creative writing and public speaking to marginalized youth 6th through 8th grade. SOUL has collaborated with schools in the inner City of Chicago helping at risk youth build on skills that will help academic advancement in pursuit of a higher education.

Congratulations, Mariah. Way to use what you've learned here in the college during your spoken word performance and your service initiatives with SOUL to win the crown.
