Laurence W. Holmes

Laurence W. Holmes joined DePaul University as an Adjunct Professor in 2012. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in Communications with an emphasis on sports broadcasting.

He earned his M.A. in Journalism from The University of Alabama. He also has a bachelor's degree in History from DePaul University.

Laurence's professional career in sports media began while studying at DePaul in 1995.

Since then, he has done every job from overnight radio producer to on-air host of his own national sports show. Laurence has been a columnist for both the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times. In addition, he has been a television news & sports anchor for WGN television and spent over a decade working on-air, for NBC Universal in Chicago.

In 2007, Laurence was named one of DePaul University's “14 Under 40 Alumni." In 2015, he was awarded the Black Catholic Heritage Award by Cardinal Blaise Cupich. In 2022 & 2024 he won the Peter Lisagor Award for Sports Journalism.

During his career he has had multiple local EMMY nominations and has been a finalist for the prestigious Marconi Award. Twice he has been a finalist for the National Association of Sports Media, Sportscaster of the Year.

Currently he hosts his own talk show on WSCR The Score. Where he's worked since 1998.

Laurence enjoys sharing his real-world experience with aspiring journalists. He is passionate about preparing students for the highs and lows of working in the broadcasting industry.

Laurence lives in Chicago. In 2021, he realized a lifelong dream of writing a comic book when he authored “Radiant Black" #18. He's a donut connoisseur and loves well-done interviews.​
