DePaul has a number of resources to help you find relevant, exciting internships and earn academic credit.
- The Communication Internship Program curates industry-specific
internship listings, several of which come directly from employers who want to hire majors from our College.
- The Career Center manages DePaul's
Handshake database, where you can search for off-campus job and internship opportunities across the city and beyond.
- Our communication internships
blog highlights new opportunities each week, including recent postings from the websites above and relevant openings from other job boards outside of DePaul.
The majority of opportunities listed above will be eligible for credit through the Communication Internship Program. If you happen to find an internship on your own, this may count for credit as long as it meets the
internship standards specified below.
Additional strategies for finding an internship include:
- Work with the Communication Internship Program Director, Michael Elias, to identify a position that best fits your professional interests.
- Talk with your professors about professional contacts they have in the Chicago area.
- Speak with classmates about their internship experiences.
- Join or participate in activities and networking events sponsored by College of Communication
student organizations
Internship Organizations
College of Communication students have interned in a variety of organizations. Recent internship sites include: ABC7 Chicago, Chicago Red Stars, Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune, Executives' Club of Chicago, Edelman, FleishmanHillard, Fox Sports, Laugh Factory, Lincoln Park Chamber of Commerce, NBCUniversal, NFL Films, U.S. News & World Report, WBEZ, Zeno Group, and many more!
Resume Review
Before applying for internships, it's important to have a polished, up-to-date resume. There are many resources available at DePaul to help you create or update your resume and other application materials, including:
Option 1: Meet with Michael Elias, College of Communication Internship Director
Request an appointment with Michael Elias, Director of Internships, at
melias@depaul.edu to discuss your resume in depth.
Option 2: Access resources at the DePaul Career Center
Take advantage of the resources available through DePaul's Career Center, including
online tips and strategies and advising available through
drop-in career coaching hours (including virtual appointments).
Internship Position Standards
To count for credit through the Communication Internship Program, a position must carry significant responsibilities in the student’s field of study. The position must also involve substantial interaction with professional staff and/or supervisory personnel who can provide guidance and mentoring.
Additionally, an internship must:
- Be a significant position that gives the student an opportunity to explore career development issues and interests.
- Run for the duration of the internship course, accumulating a minimum of 80 hours during the quarter you are enrolled
- Include a minimum of 8 hours per week at the internship site. If the internship is
unpaid, the maximum number of work hours should not exceed 20/week; if the internship is
paid, the maximum number of work hours is determined by mutual agreement between the supervisor and intern.
- Include at least two learning objectives/responsibilities that provide experience in the student’s major.
- Not entail more than 25% clerical work.
