Advanced Reporting Alumni Share Their Stories

Advanced Reporting students move on to exciting opportunities after graduation, but they remain connected to the people and experiences that shaped them during their time with the Center for Journalism Integrity & Excellence (CJIE). At the 2026  Integrity & Excellence Awards, we caught up with a few alumni to learn what they are doing now and hear them reflect on how CJIE impacted their careers.

“I’m honored to be recognized by the place that taught me how to navigate a changing media landscape, ask tough questions and hold the powerful accountable," said Haley BeMiller (CMN '14) when she learned she had been named the 2026 Distinguished Alumni. BeMiller, a state government and politics reporter for the USA TODAY Network Ohio Bureau, was an editor with The DePaulia as a student.

Rick Brown Receives the 2026 Distinguished Mentor Award

Rick Brown brought his extensive media experience to DePaul to mentor students as an instructor and advisor to Good Day DePaul. For fifteen years he dedicated himself to student success. Many of his former students, now working as journalists across the country, still reach out when they need a word of advice. Brown, recently retired, takes every call.
