PRAD Undergrad Kyla Patterson Receives Fulbright Scholarship

PRAD student Kyla Patterson
Undergraduate Public Relations and Advertising (PRAD) student Kyla Patterson, has been selected for a Fulbright Scholarship, which will allow her to spend next year in the Czech Republic teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) and researching literacy practices as they relate to gender equality. Along with her studies in PRAD here in the College of Communication, Kyla double majored in Writing, Rhetoric and Discourse with the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. Kyla is set to graduate with her Bachelor of Arts degree this June.

Of the Fulbright honor, Kyla said, “Being awarded a Fulbright is a tremendous opportunity for me that I am extremely grateful for. Over the past four years at DePaul I've cultivated a love for teaching, especially working with English as a second language learners. This Fulbright is an opportunity for me to continue to pursue this passion and get to critically engage with a culture that is not my own. I am excited to get to work with Czech students and community members to hopefully build mutual understanding between our two nations.

“I feel as if this honor is a culmination of all my hard work and dedication to my academics and engagement with the DePaul and Chicago communities. I wouldn't have been able to even contemplate applying for such an award if it wasn't for the encouragement and support of the amazing faculty and staff at DePaul. I've been truly blessed to have worked alongside and be taught and mentored by such amazing people. This accomplishment is reflective of the great and supportive learning community that DePaul fosters.”

PRAD’s Prof. Matt Ragas shared the exciting news with the college and told us, “I had Kyla as a freshman in my Discover Chicago class four years ago, and for the past three years she has done an outstanding job as the Chicago Quarter mentor for my Discover class. She has the innate curiosity of an explorer and the heart of a teacher so I was thrilled to learn she had been selected for a Fulbright to teach English classes abroad and do research."

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers research, study and teaching opportunities in over 140 countries to recent graduates and graduate students. For more information about the Fulbright Program, visit their website.

Congratulations, Kyla. We're very proud of all you've accomplished here in your studies at DePaul, and on the path you've been paving forward toward your future.
