The
Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) has honored College of Communication Journalism alumna Ali Trumbull with the 2013 Julie Galvan Outstanding Graduate in Journalism Award.
The award is named in memory of Julie Galvan, a former president of the SPJ San Jose State University Campus Chapter who was killed in a car accident in 1996 while on her way to an internship. At the close of the college year, SPJ accepts nominations for someone
who is outstanding in his or her class on the basis of character, community service, scholarship, proficiency in practical journalism and significant contributions to the chapter. SPJ national leadership selects one graduate who is considered most outstanding for national recognition.
A graduate of DePaul University, Trumbull excelled in her studies and made a significant mark at her university and in her community as a journalist and active SPJ member.
She is a founding member of the
DePaul Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists​ and held three executive board positions: Program Coordinator, Publicity Director and President. Under her leadership, SPJ DePaul won multiple SPJ national and regional awards, including SPJ National Campus Chapter of the Year and seven campus leadership awards from DePaul University in the past three years.
Trumbull has attended three national SPJ conferences, four regional conferences and is a 2012 graduate of the Ted Scripps Leadership Institute. This month, she was a facilitator for Scripps 2013 in Memphis.
Currently, Trumbull is a community news producer for Wrapports/Chicago Sun-Times Media, joining the company the day after she graduated from DePaul University with her Master's in journalism.
She will be recognized Aug. 25 at the Student Union held during the 2013 Excellence in Journalism conference in Southern California.
